Hosting a NEPSGVA Class A quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Deerfield defeated Tabor Academy 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20).
Deerfield started off strongly, moving out to early leads of 7-0 and 10-1 on the serving of Caroline Weller ‘23 and Georgia Sackrey ‘23. Consistent passing from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Elle Stearns ‘23 allowed setters Wuyee Ke ‘26 and Meghan Holland ‘23 to move the ball around to our hitters. Outside hitters Cate Shanahan ‘23 and Weller were both very effective while Evelyn Kunde ‘26 and Natalie Meyer ‘23 played well on the right side.
In the second set, the Seawolves did a nice job keeping rallies going with their scrappy defense which made Deerfield work for every point. Greta Trapp ‘25 did a nice job setting and Loran McGruder ‘24 provided steady defense while our middles (Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 and Sackrey) got more involved on both hitting and blocking. Deerfield found itself down 13-15 until a service run from Holland pushed Deerfield into a lead of 19-15 which we were able to maintain until the end of the set.
The third set featured continued good defense from Tabor but Deerfield’s hitters eventually proved too much.
Thanks to Tabor for making the trip. And thank you to the Deerfield crowd for their fantastic support and great cheering!
With the win, we’ve earned the privilege of hosting a semi-final match on Saturday against BB&N. First serve is at 2pm.
