On a picturesque fall day in the Pioneer Valley, the Big Green hosted St. Paul’s School in a Class A tilt. Both teams were ready to compete from the opening whistle. The Big Green were impressive with their commitment to possession and pursued several dangerous attacking opportunities. Defensively, the Big Green stood firm turning away any St. Paul’s opportunities in the attacking third. With the score level 0-0 with under 2 minutes to play in the first half, Fife McCargo ’23 won the ball back for the Big Green off a St. Paul’s throw-in and played the ball back to Avery Izzo ’24 who played a big ball forward to midfield. Kaelin Creagh ’24 opportunistically won the ball from the two St. Paul’s center backs and used her pace to drive into the St. Paul’s 18-yard box. With three defenders in pursuit, Kaelin cut the ball back and with poise placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Big Green the 1-0 lead. In the second, the Big Green continued to press with the hopes of doubling their lead, but were unable to capitalize. St. Paul’s played more direct in the second half with the hopes of securing an equalizing goal, but the Big Green defense remained strong on the play of goalkeeper Abigail Ng ’25, and defenders Avery Izzo ’24, Mia Goetzke ’24, Sam Olander ’23, Mary Lee ’23 and Keira Austen ’26 to preserve the shutout and 1-0 victory for the Big Green. Deerfield will travel to neighboring NMH on Wednesday, October 12 for a Class A league game against NMH. Kick off is slated for 2:30pm.
