Deerfield traveled to Westminster today for a Wednesday afternoon match with an excellent Westie squad. The Big Green started strong with several early chances including a goal from Jarvis Shema in the first seven minutes of the game. Jarvis continues his impressive streak with his fourth goal in four games. Deerfield would get a few more excellent early chances, but ultimately couldn’t convert. This gave Westie some momentum, and they began imposing their will on Deerfield. After a solid and sustained attack, Westie eventually broke through with a nicely constructed goal in the 25th minute to even the score at one. The rest of the first half saw Deerfield on their heels and more chance for Westie, but ultimately the first half ended at 1-1. The second half was electrifying with both clubs seeing some excellent chances and play going up and down the field. Westie broke the tie in the 73rd minute with a long ball and excellent run down the right side for a tough angle finish. To their credit, Deerfield immediately went back to work and tried to get the equalizer. Westie had a few more great chances that were turned away by Kai Darrell leading to one of the best moments of the season thus far. Deerfield earned a few kick from about 35 yards out with five minutes left in the game. Jeffry Kamil and Gavin Rigney stepped up to the ball to assess their options. Gavin ultimately ended up on the ball and played an exceptional service to a streaking Kenny Carlisle in the box. Kenny was able to get a head on it and sent a beautiful flick toward the goal. The keeper was beaten, but Kenny’s header rang off the crossbar. In a stroke of good luck, the ball popped straight up in the air and Kenny fought for his own rebound and headed it in to tie the game. The Deerfield bench erupted. It was a hard-fought and well-earned draw from the Big Green. We look forward to hosting Hotchkiss on Saturday for our Fall Family Weekend match.
