On Saturday, October 8th, the boys junior B footballers continued their winning ways with a 4-0 victory over the Westminster School to run their record to 5-0 on the season. The game kicked off at 3 pm on a beautiful, crisp fall day on the lower fields and it was clear from the outset that Deerfield were going to control the run of play. The Westy keeper was forced to make a few saves before Matias Cushman ’25 got the home team on the board in the 7th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in front of the visitor’s net to put Deerfield up 1-0. Much of the next 20 minutes were similar, with Deerfield getting some chances, but unable to put it home. Meanwhile, Westy had a chance or two of their own and the slim 1-goal lead felt fragile. Finally, in the 25th minute, John Mandiamy ’25 scored his second goal of the season by lofting the ball over the keeper from close range to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at half-time. Cushman scored 2 more goals in the 2nd half, in the 43rd and 51st minutes to complete the hat trick, for the final margin. Juan Del Valle ’25 nearly increased the lead to five in the 55th minute, but his strike hit the post and bounced harmlessly away. Quad squad have a long break before the 2nd to last home match of the season, Wednesday, October 19th – a rematch against Avon Old Farms at 3:30 on the lower fields.
