Led by a stout defense and a wonder-goal from Sasha Djunic ’26, the boys junior B footballers defeated Suffield Academy 3-0 on October 26th for the second time this season to run their record to 8-0. The afternoon was unseasonably warm and humid, resulting in frequent subs as the match was played on Suffield’s artificial turf football field. After a few minutes of back and forth play, Djunic scored the ‘goal of the century’ on a simple clear attempt in the 4th minute. Standing on his own 30 yard-line, he booted the ball upfield, looking for a forward. The ball traveled nearly 80 yards in the air, before bouncing a few feet in front of the Suffield keeper – and taking an abrupt, unanticipated turn into the back of the net to put Deerfield up 1-0. Deerfield controlled the run of play for the rest of the half and had several good chances, but were unable to score again and the 1st half ended with the same score. In the 50th minute, leading scorer Matias Cushman ’25 got on the end of a through ball and, relying on pure heart and effort, beat his defender and slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net to finally give Deerfield some breathing room at 2-0. Less than six minutes from time, Cole Higgins ’26 redirected a corner kick into the back of the net to provide the final margin. Brendan Butz ’23 was back in the net after being out last week and recorded his sixth clean sheet of the season. For the first time this season, the defense was anchored by Nick Smiarowski ’26 at sweeper and the defense did a great job at limiting Suffield’s chances. Quad squad will be back in action on October 29th with a road game against Andover at 1 pm.
