Led by a late brace from Cole Higgins ’26, the boys junior B footballers continued their winning ways, beating Avon Old Farms 6-0 on October 19th at home on the lower fields. With the win, the team’s record now stands at 6-0 with six games remaining on the schedule, after sweeping the home-and-home series with AOF. Matias Cushman ’25 got the hosts off on the right foot, heading home a cross in the 4th minute to give Deerfield a 1-0 lead. Incidentally, the goal was very similar to the lone goal in the 1-0 Deerfield win at AOF on September 24th. The rest of the 1st half was very even, with both teams having some chances and forcing keeper Brendan Butz ’23 to make several key saves. Finally, in the 32nd minute, striker Teddy Gonzalez ’26 scored his first goal of the season after a scramble in front of the net to give Deerfield a 2-0 lead at half-time. The 2-goal lead seemed tenuous, however, considering how much better AOF had played than in the first meeting. Thankfully, John Mandiamy ’25 quickly extended the lead in the 2nd half, scoring his third goal of the season in the 40th minute to up the Deerfield advantage to 3. Despite the fact that AOF continued to threaten the Deerfield net, they were unable to score due to the play of Butz and the back line of Sasha Djunic ’26, Tucker Gongaware ’26, and Nick Smiarowski ’26. A Juan Del Valle ’25 goal in the 53rd minute off an assist from Anthony Sparacio ’25 made the score 4-0 and removed any doubt from the outcome. Higgins’ goals, in the 65th and 70th minutes, were both the result of long through balls that he was able to get on the end of and beat the keeper. Quad squad will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 22nd at 2:30 against the Eaglebrook School, another rematch from earlier in the season.
