Despite trailing for the first time this season and conceding for the first time in six games, the boys junior B footballers rallied in the 2nd half to defeat Andover 3-1 on October 29th, on a beautiful fall afternoon in Andover, Mass. With the win, the team ran their record to 9-0 on the season. The team started slowly after the long bus ride and neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the 1st half. Both teams had several chances, but the defenses held firm and the score remained 0-0 at half-time. In the 41st minute, Andover took a shot from distance that initially looked like it was going over the bar, but it dropped just in time to elude the grasp of keeper Brendan Butz ’23 and give the home team a 1-0 lead. Faced with their first deficit of the season, Deerfield didn’t take long to respond. Michael Clifford-Levy ’26 lofted a perfect corner kick into the box and Jack Wagner ’26 slammed it home in the 43rd minute to draw Deerfield level. The next 20 minutes were tense, with the outcome still very much in doubt. In the 30th minute, Clifford-Levy picked up a loose ball and slotted it home to finally give Deerfield its first lead of the game, at 2-1. Four minutes later, leading scorer Matias Cushman ’25 got on to the end of a long clear from Sungmin Ahn ’26 and sent the ball just inside the far post in the 34th minute for the final 3-1 margin. Andover sent everyone forward in the last few minutes, but the Deerfield defense held and prevented them from scoring again. Quad squad have their final home game of the season against Bement on November 2nd, with a 3 pm kickoff on the lower fields.
