The Boys JV Hockey team started back up their game schedule on Saturday playing their first game in 20-22 against Andover. Both teams appeared to be missing players due to illness and the Covid protocols, but the game was an entertaining one nevertheless. Will Scharfenberger would start in net for the home team and he was outstanding while leading his team to a 4-1 victory.
Both teams skated well today. It wasn’t until after 11:00 minutes had been played when freshman Blake Donnellan broke the scoreless tie when he tucked home the puck off a rebound from a Ben Gisonni shot. Andover would answer with under a minute to play in period one making the score 1-1.
In the second period Deerfield really started asserting pressure deep in Andover’s end and this ultimately proved to be the difference maker on the afternoon. Will Lodge would score a pair of goals in the first 5 minutes of the period giving the team a lead they would keep throughout. The line of Lodge, Gammage, and Sotirhos applied good pressure all game and provided a the spark for others to follow.
In the third period, with Andover continuing to build their momentum for a comeback, Donnellan scored his second on the day off a nice centering pass from linemate Leo Ma.
The defensive group of Darling, Belaire, Gisonni, Morsman, and Hunt played very well as a unit in front of goalie Scharfenberger. Andover had plenty of chances to get on the scoreboard and our success for keeping them scoreless in the last two periods stemmed from not allowing them to get loose puck shots from in front. We did a good job of clearing throughout the game.
Next up for the team are games with Eaglebrook on Monday, Williston on Wednesday, and a trip to Choate on Saturday to finish a three-game week!
