The Deerfield girls JV basketball team travelled with varsity to Watertown, CT this Wednesday to compete against the Taft rhinos. After an exciting and fast-paced 32 minutes of play, Deerfield came away victorious, defeating Taft 45-19.
Cori Scagel ‘25 got the Doors off to a strong start by sinking a bucket in the first minute, quickly followed by two more in the next minute. Taft’s number 10 got the game started at the other end of the court, but Sally Rolland ‘23 quickly found a response with an inbounding play. Taft started to pick up the pace after that, but Mary O’Shea ‘25 was there to defend the basket and stop them from gaining too much momentum. Mary also made the next basket for the green team, quickly followed by a bucket from Giorgia Santore ‘24. Giorgia made another break immediately after scoring, and then Cori grabbed the rebound to score her 4th basket of the game. With five minutes left in the first half, Ellie Schiller ‘25 made her first basket of the game to bring the score to 8-19 to Deerfield. With two minutes to go in the first half, Giorgia stole the ball to break away down the court and snag a layup, and then Fiona Van Nice ‘25 finished up the half 8-25 to Deerfield.
Taft kicked off the second half by making a free throw, and then their number 11 brought the score to 11-25. Taft’s number 4 continued to be a force to be reckoned with, scoring the next four points for Taft. Deerfield struggled to find their rhythm in the second half, but Elena Tskhvitaria ‘25 scored and then assisted by an excellent rebound by Julia Zhao ‘24 and a fast break from Sally, Cori made her first basket of the second half, quickly followed by a second. Fiona did a nice job of adding points to the board in the second half, and Cori finished out the game by making two baskets in the last 30 seconds.
Each member of the team played with determination and demonstrated teamwork and sportsmanship, and we look forward to our next game!
