After their scheduled game against the Eaglebrook School was canceled on January 8th, the boy’s thirds basketball team resumed their season on January 12th with a home game against Avon Old Farms. After a scoreless few minutes to open the game, Deerfield fell behind quickly and was never able to recover, eventually losing the game 36-18 and dropping their record to 1-2 on the season. Justin Ahn ’24 led the team with 5 points and Lock Grigsby ’25 chipped in 4, while Don Hutchinson ’23 secured numerous rebounds. Deerfield struggled right from tip-off, hitting only 3 of 18 field goals attempts in the 1st half to trail by 13, 20-7, at the break. Offensive rebounding was the key to the deficit, with Avon getting numerous second and third looks at the basket after missing the initial shot. The team’s shooting percentage improved marginally in the 2nd half, when they went 5 for 26 from the field, but they were unable to overcome the double-digit halftime deficit. The team will be looking to get back to .500 on January 15th, with a 3 pm road game at Suffield Academy.
