On this Martin Luther King Monday, the the boys j.v. hockey team travelled across Route 5 to take on a younger, but very talented Eaglebrook varsity team. These games are always competitive and today would not be different. Deerfield pulled out a 5-4 OT win, but this game had everyone on the edge of their seats throughout the entire game.
Eaglebrook would score the first two goals of the game and had the visitors scrambling for answers. Deerfield would regroup and score the next three goals putting them back in control of the game.
George Darling would score his first goal of the game before the 1st period ended. This set the tone for the second period as Will Lodge would score 2 more goals giving Deerfield a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. The “Blue Line” of Will Lodge, Alex Sothiros, and Jack Gammage led the charge that ignited good energy up and down the lineup.
You have to give Eaglebrook good credit as they came out for the start of the third and took the momentum back their way. Deerfield would get a little frustrated, lose their poise momentarily, and commit some unnecessary penalties. Eaglebrook’s power play was very good tonight and they converted two of Deerfield’s penalties into goals and with 4:00 minutes left to play they held a one-goal lead.
Deerfield would then put great pressure on the Eaglebrook team and with one minute left in the game Deerfield pulled their goalie to get an extra skater on the ice. George Darling found the back of the net again with only 6 seconds remaining.
Overtime was a five-minute 3 v 3. Ben Gisonni would score the game winner halfway through the overtime period.
Will Scharfenberger was terrific in net and this was a “gut check” for this team early in their season. A good team win with lots of ups and downs. Next up is Williston at home this Wednesday at 2:45!
