Deerfield Boys Varsity Soccer tied a solid Avon team 3-3 on Wednesday. It was the first match of the season for a Deerfield squad that hadn’t played a competitive match in nearly two years. After an early Avon goal and about 10 minutes of shaky play to begin the game, Big Green settled down and began to play with some composure. The score remained 1-0 until eight minutes in to the second half when Tino Munochiveyi ‘22 headed home a beautiful free kick service from Gavin Rigney ’24 to tie the game 1-1. Avon then began to tilt the field in their direction and scored goals two and three with twenty nine minutes, and sixteen minutes left, respectively. To our credit, Deerfield continued to battle every step of the way to try to give ourselves a chance to come back. Things were looking grim until Tino Munochiveyi ’22 again finished off a corner kick from Nyle Kami ’22 with just under four minutes left to cut the lead to 3-2. The ensuing minutes were chaotic and saw a Deerfield team determined to tie things up. Finally, with just over a minute to play, Xander Grosse ’22 won a free kick, just outside the box. Gavin Rigney calmly addressed the ball, waiting for the whistle, and buried it in the upper right corner to tie the game at 3-3, which is how it would finish. All in all, a gritty effort from both sides and a hard fought draw for Deerfield.
