The Deerfield Boys JV hockey team took to the ice on Wednesday afternoon looking to get their second win of this young season against a talented Winchendon Varsity “B” squad.
This contests always is close with these teams splitting the wins and losses over the past 6 seasons. A large crowd was on hand to help support the home team as the game got underway.
Ryan Bullock opened the scoring with some of his signature grit and hard-work near the goal on a loose puck scramble. The visitors would storm back over the next ten minutes and grab a 2-1 lead with some excellent passing while taking advantage of some unnecessary turnovers in our defensive end. Connor Coutu would notch the game at 2 apiece with 3:22 remaining in the first period on a nifty shot from the blueline off a Felix Rockefeller pass.
As the teams came back from the first period ice cut, Big Green had a new determination and really started to apply pressure in the Winchendon end. Ryan would score his second goal of the game off a pass from Julian Navab. 3-2 Deerfield! Then, while short-handed, Deerfield extended its lead when Alex Sotirhos received the puck from line mate Will Lodge and made a nifty move before firing the puck past the Winchendon goalie. That made the score 4-2 and Deerfield was in control of the game at this point. Another goal was scored moments later by Jack Gammage, but was called back due to a “too many men on the ice” penalty. With the score 4-2 the teams headed into the third period. Deerfield continued to apply pressure on the Winchendon defense. Finally with 12:13 left in the game Jack Gammage got his goal back when he was set up for a quick release shot low in the slot by Will Lodge. Pretty goal and something we’ve been working on in practice so far this young season.
Another unforced turnover gave the visitors their third goal and provided them with some new life midway through the final period. However, goaltender Will Scharfenberger was on “his game” all day and he kept the score from getting any closer with some timely saves down the stretch. Today’s game puck goes to Will.
With a 2-0 start this team is looking forward to an exciting January and February! Stay in shape fellas! Come back healthy and ready to go!!
