On Wednesday, December 8th, the boy’s thirds basketball team kicked off their season with a 2 pm game at Northfield Mount Hermon. Despite holding a 2nd half lead and being competitive all game long, Deerfield dropped the contest 46-33 to start the season 0-1. Deerfield started out hot, hitting 2 consecutive 3-pointers to take a quick 6-0 lead. NMH battled back and finished the 1st quarter with a 5-point lead, 13-8. Deerfield stepped up defensively in the 2nd quarter, holding NMH to 2 points to trail by only 1, 15-14 at half-time. The pace picked up in the 3rd quarter, with both teams hitting several buckets, but NMH was able to extend the lead to 6, 29-23. Deerfield continued to play well, but couldn’t keep up with a flurry of NMH baskets in the 4th quarter, when they scored 17 points to finish with the 13-point win. Deerfield was led by Ephraim Tutu ’24 with 9 points and Jonny Scagel ’25 and Hawk Okpokwasili ’25, who each scored 7. After a mini-tournament with Suffield Academy and Loomis-Chaffee over the weekend, the boy’s thirds team will have their final game before the break, December 15th at home against Eagle Hill at 3 pm.
