On Wednesday, December 15th, the boy’s thirds basketball team hosted the Eagle Hill School in the Barn for a 3 pm tipoff. Deerfield led for the whole game, although the lead was as small as 3 in the 2nd half, and defeated the Pioneers 32-26 to even their record at 1-1. Once again, the team started the game with a couple of quick baskets and jumped out to a double-digit lead. The score was 15-4 at the end of the 1st quarter and it looked like perhaps the game was already over. That notion was quickly dispelled, however, as Deerfield were held to 2 points in the 2nd quarter and the lead was trimmed to 5 at half-time The lead was back up to 7 at the end of the 3rd quarter, as Deerfield’s shooting touch returned. Again, just when it seemed like the team could relax, Eagle Hill hit a couple of baskets, including their only 3-pointer of the game, and the lead shrunk to 3. A clutch 3-pointer by Lock Grigsby ’25 late in the quarter doubled the lead and Eagle Hill was unable to respond, with the final margin staying at 6 points. Grigsby and Hawk Okpokwasili ’25 were the leading scorers, with 7 apiece, and Jonny Scagel ’25 chipped in 5. After the winter break, the boy’s thirds team will resume their schedule with a game on the road at local rival Eaglebrook on January 8th at 3 pm.
