Starting off the last week of the regular season, Deerfield hosted NMH on Monday, winning 3-0 in front of a great home crowd.
Deerfield brought great energy from the moment we stepped on the court, getting out to a lead of 8-1 on serving from Caroline Weller ‘23 and Aoife Bruce ‘22. Cate Shanahan ‘23 was effective on the outside, putting down multiple sets from Daphne Gavros ‘22, while Georgia Sackrey ‘23 established a strong presence in the middle with her hits and blocks. Deerfield continued to extend their lead over the Hoggers, eventually taking the set 25-14.
As early darkness settled in outside, more fans arrived to cheer on the Big Green. In the second set, the teams traded points until Caroline Weller’s serving brought Deerfield a bit of breathing room at 13-9, followed by Aoife Bruce’s serves taking the score to 17-11. Natalie Meyer ‘23 played well on the right side, establishing a good block and putting away kills. Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Elle Stearns ‘23 had solid passing throughout the match, allowing us to run all our hitting options (including great middle hits from Aoife Bruce). Some serving errors from Deerfield didn’t allow us to get into a significant rhythm, but Deerfield’s strong hitting prevailed, 25-19.
The third set ended with the same score of 25-19, but this time the separation came later in the set. Serves from Zoe Gavros and Daphne Gavros gave Deerfield the lead and the match ended on an ace from Caroline Weller.
Deerfield hosts its next match on Wednesday, taking on St. Paul’s starting at 4:00pm in the Barn.
