Deerfield held on for a 2-1 victory in a very challenging game for both teams. Early into the game, Theo Lewis finished a short breakaway on an excellent through-ball from Mukhtar Handulle for a 1-0 lead. And soon after, Brick Johnson headed in a corner kick from Stephen Souder for a 2-0 lead. NMH responded with a well-earned goal on a short breakaway and we went into halftime at 2-1. NMH had us outnumbered on the bench and, in the second half, sent wave after wave of fresh legs to press our back line. We had some in-game injuries and adjusted our shape to man-mark one of their players, which asked a little more of our depleted back line. Eddie Rena, Brady Read, Jamie Weymouth, Henry Griffin, Ocean Feng, and Davey Mazur played their finest half of the season kept NMH out of the goal all the way to the final whistle. Keeper Bob Zhang came up huge in the final five minutes with a reflex, full extension left hand save which then hit the post and another diving effort on a shot in tight. It was a true team effort with midfielders Peter Kurto and Jarvis Shema making full field runs to track back and the wingers marking the pressing NMH defenders. Yesung Lam possessed well in the second half at winger and Heskey Samu was disruptive up top. Theo Lewis re-entered the game in the final ten minutes after a first half-injury to play a defensive role for us. This DA team has no quit and beat a very good NMH team today.
