We beat Avon Old Farms on their pitch 3-2 after being down 1-2 at halftime. We were aggressive right off the whistle, with Stephen Souder nearly scoring early, but we conceded the first goal after playing a little too aggressively in the back. Bob Zhang made a good effort on a ball sent off the post, but couldn’t keep an Avon player from banging in the rebound. Tommy Augustine answered soon after to level the match at 1-1 on a strong leading cross from Brick Johnson. Tommy’s speed caused confusion in their backline and he simply beat two defenders in the box to poke the ball past the keeper. Just before half, we conceded another goal on a counter-attack which our players thought was offside, but alas it was not. Emotions ran hot at halftime, but we regrouped and, though we nearly gave up a third goal early in the second half, our perseverance and defensive pressure intensified as the game wore on. Peter Kurto leveled the match with an outstanding finish on a ball played patiently from the back initially by Ocean Feng to Stephen Souder who set in a high cross from his wing. On his first touch, Peter volleyed the ball from hip height at the top of the box. It went over the keeper, hit the cross bar, and fell in. And then with under 5 minutes to play, another patient advancing ball from Ocean Feng led to a deep throw-in from Stephen Souder. Just as we had practiced the day before, Tommy Augustine flicked it into the box where Jarvis Shema flicked it again, gathered it, and put a shot on the keeper. The rebound came to Peter Kurto who finished it in decisive fashion for his second goal and the 3-2 lead. Smiles all around for overcoming a halftime deficit to a very good Avon team. And hats off to Avon for solid play and genuine sportsmanship.
