Deerfield’s boys thirds soccer made an excellent showing today against Williston’s powerful JV team, resulting in a 4-4 tie. The week before, Deerfield had scraped a tough victory against Williston’s thirds team the week before, but Deerfield was not daunted by this match-up with the next team up the school’s roster. The first half saw smart and speedy plays from Deerfield. Striker Winston Cho ’24 shot the first goal of the game 11 minutes in. MacGregor Hynds ’25, taking an opportunity from a deflected ball by Williston’s defense, sent another ball into the net at the 20 minute mark. A few minutes later, Cho scored another goal on a penalty kick. Early in the second half, Aaron Gibbons ’24 made a shot that Williston’s keeper caught and let slip; from there, Cho quickly completed the goal, thereby rounding out an impressive hat trick. For much of the game, victory seemed all but certain for Deerfield. But thirty minutes into the second half, Williston made smart plays and capitalized on gaps in Deerfield’s defense, as they scored four rapid-fire goals in the span of 7 minutes. While the game ended with a bittersweet note, Deerfield was proud not to let the other team walk away with a victory.
