Hosting a NEPSGVA Class A quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Deerfield defeated St. Paul’s, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-10).
Deerfield started off tentatively and the Pelicans got out to a lead of 2-8 before Elle Stearns ‘23 stepped to the service line and brought the score to 6-8. More strong serving from Cate Shanahan ‘23, coupled with great hitting in the front row from Caroline Weller ‘23, pushed Deerfield to their first lead at 10-9. Deerfield was then able to extend their lead through the rest of the set, with middles Aoife Bruce ‘22 and Georgia Sackrey ‘23 providing strong blocks and hits at the net.
The second set started off more strongly for Deerfield with great hustle and setting from Daphne Gavros ‘22 allowing us to run a balanced attack that spread the St. Paul’s defense. Continued excellent passing from Zoe Gavros ‘23 set up numerous offensive opportunities and Natalie Meyer ‘23 put up some great blocks.
In the third set, Deerfield’s serves allowed us to get the momentum right away, pushing out to leads of 7-1 and then 11-2. Natalie Meyer had a nice kill from the right side and Emily Rice ‘24 played well in defense.
Thanks to St. Paul’s for making the trip and for our always good matches.
