On Wednesday, varsity volleyball took the short road trip up to Gill for a match against NMH, emerging with a 3-0 victory.
A quick turnaround after an unusual school day schedule could have been a recipe for a flat start, but both teams were ready to play from the first whistle. Neither team was able to get a lead of more than two as the points went back and forth for both teams until the serves of Daphne Gavros ‘22 gave Deerfield a bit of breathing room at 21-17 that they were able to maintain until the finish at 25-22.
The second set saw more strong serving from Deerfield, particularly Elle Stearns ‘23 and Zoe Gavros ‘23. Smart, strong hitting from Cate Shanahan ‘23 (with sets from Daphne Gavros) allowed Deerfield to get more breathing room throughout the set. NMH’s good defense and blocking kept the rallies going, but Deerfield was able to take the second set 25-17.
The third set saw Aoife Bruce ‘22 connect repeatedly on quick hits from the middle. Nicely placed hits from Caroline Weller ‘23 and good blocking from Natalie Meyer ‘23 and Georgia Sackrey ‘23 provided some key points for Deerfield. Again, NMH kept the set close but Deerfield was able to emerge with the victory, 25-18.
Thanks to NMH for hosting us today.
We next travel down to New Haven, CT to play Hopkins School on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
