On a rainy Saturday where it felt nice to be inside the gym, Deerfield varsity volleyball hosted Andover and emerged with a 3-0 victory.
Deerfield started strong in the first set (with some great fan support from Tuesday’s youth volleyball clinic participants), using good passing to set up smart attacks. A service run from Aoife Bruce ‘22 pushed the lead to 8-1 and then serving from Cate Shanahan ‘23 extended the lead to 17-5. Zoe Gavros ‘23, Elle Stearns ‘23, and Emily Rice ‘24 passed well and Deerfield closed out the set, 25-14.
The second set had a similar feel, with Deerfield getting out to an 11-2 lead on serving from Elle Stearns and strong hitting from Cate Shanahan. Caroline Weller ‘23 provided both good digs in the back row and smart hits from the front row while Daphne Gavros ‘22 moved the ball well to hitters, including Natalie Meyer ‘23 on the right side and Georgia Sackrey ‘23 in the middle. Deerfield ended up winning the set 25-10.
Andover stayed tough and started to make good passes on our hits in the 3rd set, making for longer rallies and a tighter score. Deerfield bumped its lead to 17-12 on a side-out from Evie Mokarow ‘24 and then was able to maintain that lead to finish the set and the match, 25-19.
Thank you to Andover for making the trip.
Deerfield hosts the second-half of its youth volleyball clinic on Tuesday, followed by our final regular-season away match next Saturday against Taft. First serve is 4pm next Saturday against the Rhinos.
