The Deerfield Girls Varsity soccer team travelled to the Pomfret School on Saturday hoping to close out the week in convincing fashion after a great week of practice and a hard earned, come from behind win at home on Wednesday afternoon.
DA controlled possession for much of the first half, taking shots from distance and using the width of the field effectively but an organized Pomfret team made it challenging to create anything inside the 18-yard box. Jackson Kinsler ’22, Morgan Moriarty ’22 and Emma Kahle ’22 created opportunities with their high work rate, helping the team transition from defense to offense seamlessly. The team went into the half tied 0-0 and the girls were motivated heading into the second half after a solid showing in the first forty minutes.
With the score tied with twenty minutes to go, DA still controlled the flow of play and continued to push numbers forward looking to break the tie. A beautifully taken free kick from Jasmine Irrizary ’23 was denied by a brilliant save from the Pomfret keeper as she parried it over the crossbar. With twelve minutes to go, the home team managed to knock home a rebound through traffic after a dangerous corner kick giving them a 1-0 lead. For the remainder of the game, DA pushed numbers forward and did everything they could to tie the game but Pomfret’s solid defensive performance helped them walk away with a 1-0 win.
The girls put forth an excellent effort on a hot fall day and will continue to improve as the season goes on.
