After a two-hour tour of New England’s autumnal splendor, the Deerfield harriers met their competitors at St. Paul’s for a 5k romp through beautiful trails and around bucolic playing fields. Quinn Hampson ’22 made short work of the pack, and running alone to victory a full minute and a half ahead of his nearest competitor. 9th grade wunderkind Max Wang took 2nd place overall, just ahead of two hard charging St. Paul’s Pelicans, who Carson Bynum ’23 chased all the way to the line, thus collecting fifth place overall and Deerfield’s 3rd scoring position. Rounding out the scoring five were Blix Salz ’24 and Robbie Hua ’24 who each raced hard to season bests. Next up, Joe Brown ’23 narrowly edged his teammates Chase Cherewatti ’22 and Trey Souder ’22 and all three took home seasonal best times as well. With these efforts, the varsity won the team race in 23 points to St. Paul’s 32. The JV also took the race with a nail-biting single-point lead as a result of 9th grader Billy Tang’s sprint finish, which pushed St. Paul’s final scorer down one spot and the overall score to 28-29 in favor of the Doors. Overall, it was a great day of hard-won victory for the Deerfield runners, and the runners will look forward to racing Pelicans of the southerly, Loomis Chaffee variety, not to mention the infamous Wild Boars from Choate Rosemary Hall.
