Deerfield rebounded from a loss to St. Paul’s with a 4-3 victory over Williston’s varsity squad to finish out the pre-Long Winter Weekend stretch of the season on a high note. The top three players faced stiff competition: at #1, Christina Li ’20 fell to a talented opponent 3-0, as did junior Grace Russell at #2, though both girls came within a few points of winning at least one of their games. Sophomore Isha Rao, whose meteoric rise through the ladder to #3 has powered several victories throughout the season, sought redemption from a St. Paul’s loss and hung tough to win a blistering 3-2 match, after dropping the first two games and then securing victories in the last three in perhaps the closest and most exciting match of the day. Esme Benjamin ’20 at #4 made short work of her opponent, notching a 3-0 victory, while senior Helen Mak dropped just one game en route to a 3-1 win. Senior Janis Chen contributed the much-needed fourth point in a 3-1 win to secure the day for Deerfield. At #7, junior Lilly Berry had a difficult day and ended up losing 2-3 in a close match, while her fellow junior Camille Glatt in exhibition at #8 won a nice 3-1 game. The team was happy to get another win under its belt and looks forward to a matchup with Miss Porter’s next week upon returning from the long weekend.
