The JV squash team finished out an overwhelmingly victorious season in a fitting fashion: with a 7-0 trouncing of historic rival Choate, and with a majority of the wins coming from graduating seniors who polished off their careers in a satisfying manner. Evens were up first, and junior Grace Russell, senior Esme Benjamin, senior Janis Chen, and junior Camille Glatt all in exhibition nabbed quick 3-0 victories over their opponents. Glatt’s match was a highlight, as she won her first match 11-2 and then, having gained steamed, bageled her opponent twice in a brilliant win. Odds took the court next: sophomore Isha Rao at 3 got a 3-0 win, as did senior Helen Mak at 5, junior Lilly Berry at 7, and junior Emma Johnson in her exhibition match.
Christina Li, senior co-captain, was last on the court at the #1 spot. She won the first game but wavered a bit in the second and lost, bringing the score to 1-1. Both teams gathered to support their top players and Deerfield watched in delight as, thanks to Russell’s coaching support in between games, Li dominated the final two games and made Deerfield’s score for the day a perfect 7-0.
The team will miss the leadership, constancy, and vibrantly inclusive attitudes of its four seniors, Li, Benjamin, Mak, and Chen. We wish them fantastic senior springs and will be sad to bid them goodbye on graduation day, but Deerfield JV squash is sure to maintain a strong position amongst its peers in the coming years thanks to the depth of our program and the commitment of our players! The remaining team members will stow away their rackets for now but look forward to another joyous and winning season next year.
