The boys JV hockey team finally reached the .500 mark on Saturday beating the visiting Taft team 5-2. The game started with Taft getting on the scoreboard first at the 10:06 mark in the 1st period. That would be their last goal of the contest until late in the game after trailing 5-1. Alex Leong was his usual steady self and he made several superb stops in the first period to dampen any kind of momentum Taft was hoping to build. Freshman defenseman Darien Chiang would start the scoring on the first power play opportunity of the game for Deerfield. Aidan Philie made a beautiful cross ice pass finding Darien on the move to the goal. Sophomore Will Lodge would give the team the lead for good minutes later when he netted a nifty breakaway goal.
The second period was all Deerfield as low player numbers for Taft began to take its toll on their players. Bodie Fish, John Bloomer, and Ryan Welch all found the back of the net as the home team stretched their lead to 5-1. Three different lines were scoring lines today showing good team depth and contributions from many on the day.
Once again, our defense group of Strait, Darling, Chiang, Gardner, Gisonni, and Judelson was solid all throughout the game and never really allowed Taft much ice space after the initial period was over.
The team’s record jumps to 6-6-1 as they reach the .500 mark for the first time this season after starting off losing their first 5 games. With four games left, all strong opponents, this team will take one game at a time and work to play their best hockey of the 2019-2020 season. Several parents hosted a team dinner after the game and we thank them all for a special event! That was very nice!
Wednesday’s game will be played at home against Eaglebrook who beat us early in the season 4-1. The game begins at 5:00pm.
