The Girls Thirds basketball team suffered a tough 28-29 loss to Stoneleigh Burnham JV team to fall to 3-9 on the season. The six girls who were able to suit up played their best all-around game of the season. Defined by fast breaks, foul shots, and lead changes, the game was a bruiser. Aurelia Bolton ‘22 was the first to set the tone for Deerfield with a strong and-one finish. Sydney Dinkins ’22 and Sunshine Chen ’23 ran the break well and Arie Lewis-Pugh ’22 often found them for easy lay-ups. Tied at the half, the game heated up in the second half. Blood was spilled and ice was distributed to several players as the intensity mounted. Lewis-Pugh was the recipient of a 3rd quarter eye-gouge that took her out of the game and left the Big Green with only 5 players for the majority of the half. Mia Calcano ’23 and Destynee St. Agathe-Faure ‘23 picked up the slack in a huge way, as players netted their first buckets of the season. Calcano’s turn-around swish in the fourth quarter garnered some in-game hugs and a huge reaction from the fans in attendance. Despite contribution from every player on the team and a Jordan-like return from Lewis-Pugh to the floor in the final minutes, the Big Green couldn’t stop Stoneleigh’s star who was able to score 27 of the team’s 29 points. The Big Green will play its last game of the season against Choate at home on Friday, Feb. 27th.
