On Saturday, February 22nd, the boys 3rds basketball team hosted archrival Choate Rosemary Hall for a 2 pm tipoff. In a season full of heartbreaking losses, this might have been the worst. Despite overcoming a disastrous 1-28 shooting performance in the 1st half and holding a 4-point lead with 2 minutes left in the game, Deerfield lost 32-30. The loss to CRH dropped the team’s record to 2-12 on the season, with one game left. The good news was that Deerfield’s defense was stout throughout the game, namely the half-court press, which led to numerous turnovers. CRH was held scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the game, but Deerfield could only build a 4-0 lead during that time. Eventually, the field goal drought caught up to them and they trailed 14-7 at the half. As it did against NMH, the offense came alive in the 2nd half and Deerfield finally took the lead back with 10:52 left in the game. Just when it seemed that Deerfield would run away with the game, the field goal shooting went cold again and CRH hit a clutch 3-pointer and several free throws to seal the game. Jack Chorske ’22 led the team with 13 points, his personal best for the season. The boys 3rds team will close out their season on the road, with a 2:45 start on February 26th against Loomis.
