Squash, Girls: Thirds loses to Suffield

Event Details

The Girls Thirds Squash team returned to competition after a month off and narrowly lost to Suffield Academy’s Junior Varsity team, three matches to four. The deep Deerfield club actually returned from Connecticut with more total victories, as it swept the three exhibition matches. All the contests were hard fought, perhaps none harder than DA’s tough losses in the 4th and 6th matches. In the latter, sophomore Grace Honos struggled with inconsistencies in her serve but showed an impressive volley game, with terrific depth and smart placement, pushing the fifth game to extra points. In the former, ninth-grader Valentina Williamson faced off against her squash doppelgänger, with point after point demanding ferocious rallies, and an epic fourth game that left both coaches’ nerves shot. Sisters Lauren and Kate Stenger, by comparison, made their matches look easy. Lauren flashed a dependable deep shot and Kate deployed a knee-buckling serve, winning in four and three games, respectively. The other official victory was Liv Waterfall’s. A squash novice with a cannon for an arm, she began moving beyond a complete reliance on her power to experiment with a short game, to great effect. But the most memorable part of the trip was the competitive squash debuts of Megan Ng, Annalisa Fang, and Grace Stone. Megan’s advanced footwork, Annalisa’s ability to put the ball where she wanted it, and Grace’s boasting helped the team shut out Suffield in the exhibition matches and increase confidence in its depth going into the second half of the season. Deerfield welcomes Suffield for a rematch at home on February 19 but now turns its attention to the toughest match on its schedule: Saturday’s trip to Phillips Andover.
