Boys JV hockey won their second game of the season against visiting Williston. Williston arrived with a short lineup as they were experiencing some illness within their ranks. However, this did not keep them from battling hard for the full 45 minutes. Aidan Philie scored on the first shift of the game off a nice pass from Bodie Fish. Midway through the first period Williston evened the score slipping the puck past our starting goalie on the day Lawrence von Steuben. Minutes later Bodie put his team back in the lead for good with his goal coming off a nice pass from Aidan.
The second period saw Deerfield go on a 4-0 run with goals coming from Alex Strait, George Darling, Will Lodge, and Darien Chiang. The offense was churning and was getting good results. Three of those four second period goals came from blueliners. Williston caught their breath late in the middle period and tucked one home to make the score 6-2 after two periods.
There would be no quit on this Williston team today. We tried early to put the game out of reach with several good scoring opportunities, but their goalie was playing very well. Then Williston scored once, then twice, and then a third time closing the score gap to 6-5 with 5 minutes remaining in the game. We made our problems worsen at this point by taking a couple of penalties. Goalie von Steuben came up big for his team when he needed to during this late stretch. Finally, Mike Scharfenberger put the game out of reach scoring with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Alex Strait would score his second goal on the day with an empty net shot the length of the ice. Final score was 8-5. We’ll face Williston again in February at their place and we hope to place a full 45 minutes there when we do meet again. Great effort on both teams today.
Next up for Big Green will be Choate on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. We lost to Choate early in the season so we’ll be working hard to reverse the outcome on Saturday!
