The boys JV Hockey team hosted Cushing Academy Varsity “B” at the Deerfield rink today and skated away with a well-earned 3-0 win. A Deerfield player who came to the rink ready to play from the first puck drop on was senior goalie Alex Leong. Throughout the entire game Alex was excellent between the pipes and gave his team a chance to take a lead and win the game.
The game was a back and forth battle and for the first two periods the score remained tied at 0-0. The Deerfield defense was solid all game and much credit needs to go to Alex Strait, Darien Chiang, Matt Gardner, George Darling, Alex Judelson, Ben Gisonne, and Bobby Miele. These players in combination with the excellent goaltending from Alex made it hard for Cushing to build any sort of offensive momentum.
The third period was all Deerfield. With just over two minutes gone in the period Dom Sessa picked up a loose puck in the Cushing end off an errand pass and slid the puck past their goalie for the first goal of the game. Cushing tried very hard to crack our good team defense and the score held at 1-0 until Aidan Philie scored a power play goal with an assist from line mate Bodie Fish with 6:42 remains in the game. Again, Cushing worked very hard to get on the scorers’ sheet but Alex Leong didn’t give them anything!
With just over a minute to play Matt Gardner tucked home the added insurance goal securing the victory for the home school. The line of Philie, Fish, and Rockefeller produced some good chances throughout and would finish the game with a +2 rating.
Peter Marchese, Will Lodge, Ben King, and Dom Sessa all had good games and earning a +1 rating for the day.
The green line of Francis Gannon, Ryan Welch, and Mike Scharfenberger played tough two-way hockey and gave the team some great play in all three zones today.
Next up for the Big Green is Hotchkiss. That game is Saturday at Deerfield at 3:30
