The girls thirds basketball found themselves outmatched Wednesday afternoon against the Frontier JV team. Coaches Hunt and Romick tasked the team with bringing the intensity early. The Big Green responded to that charge but were no match for a smart, cohesive, and experienced Frontier team. The Big Green’s defensive intensity went a little too far as three of their 7 players – Arie Lewis-Pugh, Samantha Pehl, and Sydney Dinkins – all fouled out by the fourth quarter. Deerfield struggled to find good looks in the first half and only managed to put a single point on the board before the half. The Big Green has not seen this type of shooting yet from any other team. No opponent has made a three-point field goal against Deerfield’s defense all season. However, Frontier scored 6 three-point field goals in the second half. The highlight of the night came early in the fourth quarter. After a team huddle and cheer for “one bucket”, Arie Lewis-Pugh dropped in two 12-foot runners, igniting the large crowd of supporters. Despite a hard 5-44 loss, the girls played tough until the end and still found a way to enjoy themselves throughout the game. The girls look to bounce back next Wednesday away at NMH.
