On Saturday, the varsity volleyball team took the bus ride to Farmington, CT for back-to-back matches against Miss Porter’s School and then Milton Academy.
Missing some of our experienced players due to standardized testing and injuries, Deerfield players showed great hustle and tenacity in playing Miss Porter’s School (MPS). The first set was back-and-forth with Deerfield generally in front due to strong passing from Daphne Gavros ‘22 and smart hitting from Keri Clougherty ‘21. Despite having a couple match points, Deerfield was unable to close out the set and MPS took the first set 27-25. Deerfield responded with strong play and good setting from Sophia Burke ‘23 as well as hitting from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Georgia Sackrey ‘23 to take a solid lead in the second set, but some untimely errors by Deerfield and increased pressure from MPS allowed MPS to win the second set 25-19 and take the match.
After a short break for snacks and drinks, Deerfield returned to the court against Milton with a challenge to minimize their errors and expand on their strengths, a task at which they succeeded in pulling off the 2-0 victory. Big service runs from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Aoife Bruce ‘22 as well as timely hitting from Michelle Zimmerman ‘21 and Evan Burkert ‘21 allowed Deerfield to win the sets 25-15 and 25-19, respectively.
On Wednesday, volleyball hosts Worcester Academy for our first home match of the season at 4pm.
