G1: 28-26 S-B, G2: 25-14 S-B
In their second game of the season, Deerfield thirds volleyball traveled down route 5 to challenge Stoneleigh-Burnham’s JV volleyball team. Though the match was a homegoing of sorts for Julia Shulman (‘22), a former student at Stoneleigh-Burnham, the games were anything but comfortable for the team, who were playing in their first away game. Some nerves showed at first, where missed serving opportunities quickly built into an early lead for Stoneleigh-Burnham, but a soaring two handed block from Koko Akpan (‘23) set the tone for a Deerfield comeback. Energized, the girls quickly reduced the deficit to just one point at 24-23. Facing defeat, Deerfield desperately needed a strong serve to stay in the game. Enter Zoe Matias (‘23), the strong spirited player proceeded to serve a speedy low-hovering ace, keeping Deerfield in the match. The second game leaned more heavily towards Stoneleigh Burnham, due to some meteoric serving from some of their players, though Deerfield continued to demonstrate grit and resolve. Though a tough loss for Deerfield, the girls continued to show spirit and pride.
