In their 2019 season opener, the Big Green hosted the Milton Academy Mustangs on a rainy fall afternoon. Occasional downpours made for a slick surface as the two teams battled for control in the first half. Connecting on the flanks, Deerfield had some early chances, most notably a breakaway from Angie Rey ‘21 that ricocheted off the crossbar. The back line for the Big Green (Haley Sundstrom ‘21, Emma Visnapuu ‘21, Marissa Massey ‘20, and Annika Jensen ‘23) neutralized Milton’s speed up top and the first half ended scoreless on both sides. Rain persisted into the second half, making DA’s connections through the midfield more challenging. Milton netted the first goal of the game off of a free kick outside of the box. They came back to score twice more, catching DA on their heels, before the Big Green answered with a goal of their own. Annabel Gerber ‘20 delivered a driven service ball from a free kick just beyond the 18 yard box that was deflected to find the back of the net. After a diving save by keeper Angie Czeremcha ‘21, The Mustangs scored off of the deflection, making the final score 4-1. Deerfield will remain at home for their next contest against the Westminster Martlets on Wednesday.
