Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity loses to Westminster

Event Details

The sunny weather heralded our first match of the season against Westminster. Though Deerfield came out a little flat, a cross from Caroline Hoff ’22 to Kiki Brainard ’22 resulted in a beautiful goal over the keeper’s head, putting Deerfield in the lead. Westy responded with two goals of their own, sneaking past our defenders, to put them up 2-1 at half time. Though the Doors were down, there were some great moments, Kat Hioe ’20 stopped nine of 11 shots that came her way, including a key corner late in the half. There was also some great passing through the middle of the field by our midfielders, Emma Tennant ’21, CC DesLauriers ’23, Mary Lee ’23 and Whitney Vogt ’20.

The second half brought a renewed energy. Though the game was still back and forth, Deerfield made some beautiful plays in the midfield and began to work as a cohesive unit. Our defenders stepped up and made some great plays, and Sarah Wright ’20 and Kristine Yang ’20 were a force to be reckoned with. Lindsay Carey ’23 had some good clears and ball movement to get it up field, while Maddy Sofer ’21 ran down the ball time and time again. In her first game as a goal keeper, Greer Anderson ’22 made nine of 11 saves, and even one direct penalty kick!

Despite our effort, and a truly amazing penalty kick for a goal from Eve Andon ’23, Westy could not be stopped, and scored two more goals, ending in a 4-2 loss for the Doors. Though the result wasn’t what we hoped for, there was a lot of great soccer played, and tons of talent on our team this season! Special thanks to the Carey’s for some amazing post-game brownies.
