The boys’ varsity soccer team opened its season with a 3-3 tie against a tough Avon squad. The 80-plus degree weather pushed the boys to fight through the heat as well as the tough competition brought from Avon. The first score came in the first half by Deerfield’s own, Marcel Aziamale ‘20. It came from a quick restart outside the 18-yard box that seemed to catch the opponents by surprise. Coming off a long bus ride and participating in a shortened warmup didn’t seem to stop the Big Green from taking the lead into halftime. Although the sun continued to beat down on the field, both teams carried on with a total of 5 more goals in the second half. With a mistake in the defensive end of Avon, an own goal was slotted from an attempted cross. Deerfield’s third goal was scored by senior co-captain Zach Davis ‘20 off a half volley that had been flicked on with a header from Marcel in the attacking half. Avon found some extra energy and was able to score two more goals in the last 30 minutes of the game to tie it 3-3. Appreciation is needed towards midfielders Brendan Kish ‘20 and senior co-captain Luca Antongiovanni ‘20 for displaying great leadership in the center of the field for a full 90 minutes. Both teams were drained from the sun and competition that each team brought to the field. A competitive game to say the least, moments of strength will be remembered, and flaws will be studied and fixed. Next for the Big Green will be the home opener against Salisbury on September 14th.
