On Wednesday afternoon Deerfield Boys’ Varsity Soccer traveled to central Connecticut for a match against Suffield Academy. The game was contested in warm weather and under clear skies. DA started well, pressing forward and creating numerous – though unsuccesssful – scoring opportunities in the first 15 minutes of play. As the match continued, the Suffield team began to find their feet, and the tide of play turned in their direction – definitively so in the 30th minute of play, when a Suffield forward redirected a cross from the right past diving goalkeeper Ben Diffley ‘20. Deerfield was unfortunate to be at the receiving end of a number of dangerous and late tackles – one of which resulted in a serious ankle sprain to winger JB Conner ’20, the team’s only naturally left-footed player. As in the first half, so in the second Deerfield was unable to find the back of the Suffield net, while in the 70th minute Suffield’s captain was able to drive forward and slot home a fine shot to put his team up 2-0. It was a frustrating afternoon for a hard-working Deerfield team, and they hope to achieve a better result on Saturday against Brunswick School.
