Soccer, Boys: Varsity defeats Kent

Event Details

Coming off a strong – but losing – mid-week home game against a talented Taft School team, Deerfield varsity boys played 90 minutes of fine soccer on Saturday afternoon, defeating the host team, Kent School, by a resounding 4-1 scoreline.  Evidently the 2-½ hour drive to western Connecticut did not adversely affect the team, as they dominated the play from start to finish.  Throughout the match the DA back four did a tremendous job of containing Kent’s attack, which was spearheaded by a very talented and very, very quick #10.  The counterpart to their defensive cohesion and effectiveness was the enthusiasm and energy with which the DA boys launched repeated attacks aginst the Kent team.  Kent fought hard and defended well, but Deerfield eventually notched the only goal of the first half in the 30th minute, when Brendan Kish ’20 struck a ball which careened off a defender and dribbled through the opposing goalkeeper’s hands and into the goal.  Kent struck back in the 10th minute of the second half, converting a penalty kick that just escaped the hands of diving goalkeeper Ben Diffley ’20; but Deerfield responded immediately, when Skye Bacon ’20 helped to convert a ball from Brendan Kish less than a minute later.  The rest of the game belonged largely to Deerfield, though Kent made numerous forays into the DA box and on several occasions came very close to narrowing the scoreline.  In the 26th minute of the second half Jimmy Goranov ’20 pounced on a loose ball in the box and ripped home a blast to the bottom left-hand corner of the goal, effectively sealing the victory for DA – and scoring his first varsity goal for Deerfield!  Tynan Creagh ’22 put the icing on the cake in the very last second of the game, heading home a Brendan Kish corner-kick and thus notching his second goal of the season.  A decisive victory for the Big Green, and a well-deserved one at that.  Special congratulations to Chris Goranov ’20, who made his varsity debut against Kent.  And the boys want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to their parents who travel to home and away games and provide them with support, encouragement, and so much good food!  Deerfield looks forward to what will surely be a tough away match next Wednesday at defending Class-A champions, Berkshire.
