In front of family and friends and underneath clear skies, Deerfield played their home opener against Exeter this afternoon. With the exception of a few plays that resulted in a couple of shots and handful of corners, Deerfield’s defensive and mid-field units kept the ball out of their defensive end through much of the game. Muffie Mazambani ’20 controlled the middle of the field, redirecting balls forward and finding her teammates sticks across the field. Hannah Roche ’21 scored the first goal off a pass from Maddie Zavalick ’22. It was Zavalick who went on to score the second goal during the second half, deflecting a shot from Mazambani. Deerfield had 19 corners and outshot Exeter 17 to 1. Exeter’s goalie made some incredible saves and the play was exciting to follow. Next, Deerfield travels to NMH to play on Wednesday.
