It was a hard fought 6-1 win for the Deerfield Boys Varsity Tennis team at home on Monday evening. The win brings the team’s record to 8-2 on the season.
Deerfield’s doubles play remains impressive on the season. The #3 team of Ji/Bronckers made quick work of Cataldo/MacDonald 8-0 keeping their perfect record of 9-0 alive. #2 Sarachek/Yao extended their record to 8-1 by defeating Sierros/Robbins 8-3. #1 Auersperg/Pathapati were within a game of their opponents Wang/Durst until breaking serve and then holding to close out the match 8-6.
#2 Deepak Pathapati had to default his match due to an injury so heading into singles the score was tied at 1-1. In the #4 spot Eli Ji quickly won his match 6-1, 6-0 against Joey Robbins to give Deerfield a 2-1 lead. Then junior Adrian Yao won his match at #5 against Luke Po 6-0, 6-1 to make the score 3-1. Deerfield only needed one more point to secure the win, however the remaining matches were all close and we needed to fight hard on all three courts to ensure the win.
The boys did just that, first with Cosmo Hunt at #6 battling back from a dip in play during the second set to win decisively in a third set super breaker 6-3, 2-6, 10-1. This clinched the win for Deerfield but there were two more matches left that both had marathon first sets.
#1 Alfi Auersperg pulled out his first set in a tiebreaker and then used offensive play to dominate in the second to defeat Ken Wang 7-6 (4), 6-2. That left #3 Achille Sarachek on the court, having also won his first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(3). Sarachek had really long rallies every point to win his second set 6-4.
With only one day off in between matches, Deerfield will be on the road again on Wednesday, 5/8 against Hotchkiss.
