Girls Varsity Tennis Notches Third Straight Road Win
Deerfield’s Girls Varsity Tennis squad was back on the road for an afternoon contest in Simsbury, CT on Wednesday. The weather was chilly but the competition kept the match lively. Deerfield jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Westminster, sweeping the doubles matches. These matches featured some strong net-play from both sides of the net.
Singles results favored Deerfield’s side with our squad taking almost every ladder position. Isha Rao, Emma Weech, and Sophia Genender held comfortable leads throughout their matches. The ten-game pro set format tested the teams mental toughness and our squad did a great job staying consistent to put these wins in the books.
Ashley Manning’s second singles match was a highlight of the day. Ashley’s Westy opponent brought strong serves and steady baseline play to the table. This match featured a few lead changes– each player making the most of momentum shifts. Manning used her trademark slices and powerful approach shots to get an edge. Ashley buttoned down and pulled away late, ultimately winning 10-7.
Daphne Gavros won in a nail-biter at fourth singles. These two players stayed on-serve for twenty games. At ten-ten, the contest entered a tie-break. Daphne found a new gear– volleying and smashing her way to a 7-1 tie break win.
The team looks to build this early-season success with the first home match of the year on Saturday. Taft will come to Deerfield for a 4pm start. See you at the courts!
