Boys varsity tennis got their first win of the season 7-0 against Longmeadow at home on April 3. Battling strong New England spring winds, the whole team showed their mental toughness by outplaying their opponents on every court.
The closest match of the day belonged to Alfi Auersperg at #1 singles who beat an up-and-coming freshman named Kostas Kollias 7-5, 6-2. Auersperg was down 1-4 in the first set before cleaning up his game and winning the next 4 games to take a 5-4 lead. Kollias battled back to 5-5 but Auersperg used his serve and consistency to close out the set, after which there was no turning back.
Deepak Pathapati earned his second straight win at #2 singles beating Ashvin Babu 6-1, 6-3. At #3 singles, sophomore Achille Sarachek won his match handily 6-2, 6-1. Eli Ji got the win at #4 for Deerfield beating Nishant D’Souza 6-1, 6-0, though he had to fight hard as D’Souza ran down every ball and used slices to draw Ji up to the net. At #5, Adrian Yao won his match against Breggy Sivakumar 6-1, 6-1. Rounding out the singles lineup was Sam Bronckers who defeated Owen McGeer 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, senior Jeffrey So stepped in to pair with Deepak Pathapati at #1 to defeat Ben Griffins and Liam Knowlton 8-2. Sarachek and Yao won their match at #2 against Jack Suher and Justin Brayton by a score of 8-5. Ji and Bronckers logged their second doubles win at #3 defeating Will Swanson and Noah Du handily, 8-1.
