What a game today! It was an incredibly well-played game by both teams. The Big Green jumped out to an early 2-1 thanks to a scrappy goal by Ollie Pink and a beautiful fast break netted by Will Dale. In the second quarter, Longmeadow jumped ahead and by halftime the score was 3-2, which was then extended to 4-2 heading into the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter got off to a fast start with a faceoff win by Luke Terry who fed a sprinting Jack Lund for a beautiful long-stick goal. With 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, trailing 6-5 and a man down, Will Savage made an awesome save right in front of the goal. The next 2 minutes 54 seconds were back and forth. Ultimately, DA went man up with 6 seconds left in the game with the ball at the midfield line. Ollie Pink started with the ball, passed it to Max Wuchenich on the right alley who drew a man and dumped the ball down to Will Dale on the right wing. Will made a nice move to get to his right going to the middle of the field and let the ball go with :01 on the clock. When the ball hit the back of the net, zeros showed on the clock. This sent the game into overtime. In overtime, the defense came up huge after a long possession. Longmeadow threw an errant pass that trickled over the midfield. After a bit of a scrum, the ball skirted loose near the opponent’s restraining line. Keith Davenport picked up the ground ball and was off to the races. He was able to get underneath his defender and finish to win the game. The bench erupted and sprinted to jump on Keith.
The defense played exceptionally today. Behind aggressive defending by Elliot Flagg, who had a handful of caused turnovers, Pat McKee, who slid hard all day, and Jack Lund, who was on opponents’ gloves the entire game, the defense kept us in the game. Furthermore, Matthew Fierro was a force in the middle of the field and played with a determination that was awesome to see.
It was an incredible game to be a part of. One of the best things about today was that the team never quit. Even when things were not going our way late in the game, nobody gave up. Everyone was bought in to everything we were doing and there was no doubt we were going to fight to the very end.
