Deerfield fell to Groton by a score of 6-1 in their season opener and the first ever match played in The Morsman Tennis Pavilion.
Doubles saw new pairings in all three doubles lineups. First time varsity players Eli Ji and Sam Bronckers defeated Ben Jones and Jared Gura 8-6 in the #3 spot to log Deerfield’s lone doubles win. At #1 doubles, Alfi Auersperg and Deepak Pathapati played well but fell to the team of Matt Kandel and Powers Trigg. At #2, Achille Sarachek and Adrian Yao also fell to their opponents 8-4.
Playing #2 singles, Deepak Pathapati scored Deerfield’s only point of the day winning his match against Aaron Jin 6-3, 6-4. Groton’s strong lineup was too tough for Deerfield as they swept the rest of the singles matches. However, at #5 singles Adrian Yao played a close match against Jared Gura, ultimately losing 6-4, 7-6 (8) in an almost two-and-a-half hour battle.
Deerfield will be back in action at home on Wednesday at 4pm against Longmeadow.
