Deerfield 88 – MacDuffie 15
Deerfield’s JV swim team wrapped up their season in an exciting home tri-meet against Bement and MacDuffie. The team swam extremely well, defeating both teams. The meet with Bement was the 4th encounter with this local rival and the season concluded with each team defeating the other twice. The meet with MacDuffie was the first in the past two seasons.
The Deerfield wins were the result of some strong swims by both newcomers and veteran swimmers. Declan Culinane was first in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke. Lucy Miquel won the 50 butterfly and the 50 backstroke. Cam Howe was 3rd in the 100 IM and 50 backstroke. Emily Feng was 3rd in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Alastair Bock was 3rd in the 50 freestyle. Grace Mazur was 3rd in the 50 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. Ian Gordon won the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Trisha Boonpongmanee was 3rd in the 100 breaststroke. Ismay Anderson was 2nd in the 50 breaststroke and Daniel Kang was 3rd. Deerfield relays also scored well as Deerfield won both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay.
Sadly the team bid farewell to seniors Ian Gordon, Beth Wang, and Lucy Blake. Ian served as captain this season and was a leader in the breaststroke. Although he joined the team a little late, he transitioned quickly into the breaststroke specialist the team required. His final meet gave his team the needed wins but also resulted in best times. Beth Wang’s first year on the swim team was highly successful. She began the season trying out diving, but eventually settled into swimming. Her final race in the final event of the meet demonstrated the improvements she had made, as she dropped almost 1 minute in the 100 freestyle over the course of the season. Lucy Blake became a distance freestyle specialist this season, eagerly volunteering to swim the 500 freestyle and making it her own. Her phenomenal progress throughout the year was capped by a 17 second drop in this final meet. Her leadership as captain and in lane 2 was much appreciated. We will miss the leadership and hard work of our seniors and wish them well.
