In the final home game of the season, Deerfield fell to a fast and skilled Williston squad at home on Wednesday afternoon. The first period was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams moving the puck well and generating chances. We had several near misses, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Jordan Manning ’19 did a nice job in our net, making 7 of her 14 saves this period. We spent the first two minutes of the second period all over the Williston zone and buzzing around the net, but the Williston goalie made several good saves to keep the game scoreless. Then, a prolonged shift in our defensive zone seemed to turn the momentum, and Williston pounced on our every mistake for the rest of the period. We went into the final frame down 4-0, but this team doesn’t know how to give up. Two power play goals in the third period (Mary Edmonds ’19 from Mae Emerson ’19 and Deirdre Mullowney ’19, then Mullowney from Edmonds and Emerson), allowed us to creep back into the game, but Williston skated away with a 5-2 victory. Shot were 21-19 in favor of Deerfield. Not the result we wanted, but as has been the case all season, our great senior class stepped up when we needed them most to provide positive and encouraging leadership. We will finish our season at Loomis on Saturday afternoon. Many thanks to all of the parents and families who put together a wonderful gathering after the game to honor the great class of 2019. Led by Michelle Smith, the Mullowneys and Fujiyoshis, our families went above and beyond once again in support of our team.
