Deerfield defeated Choate for the first time since 2008 by a score of 20-14. The Deerfield defense made a goal line stand with 2 minutes left in the game to seal the victory and clinched a spot in the Bill Glennon bowl against Milton Academy. Deerfield recorded an astonishing 6 turnovers in the first half. Three of them came by way of special teams. Ari Kraan recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. Aidan Philie recovered a fumble on the first punt of the game that set up Deerfield’s first touchdown. Kraan had an interception on Choate’s second drive of the game. On Choate’s third drive, LB Matt Pecora intercepted a pass on third down. 4 turnovers caused in the 1st quarter! In the second quarter, Leonard St. Gourdin blocked a punt and three plays later QB Cortland Dicks hit WR Joe Dowling for a 17 yard touchdown pass to give Deerfield a 14-0 lead. On the next Choate drive, Caleb Newman forced a fumble and Luke Terry recovered. Deerfield took a 14-7 lead into halftime. Choate tied the game up with a quick score at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Deerfield responded immediately with a 13 play drive that ended in a Griffin Schutz 1 yard touchdown run to go ahead 20-14. Deerfield held on for the win after a 7 minute 4th quarter Choate drive was stopped on 4th and goal by Caleb Newman and Aidan Philie. Deerfield got the ball, got 2 first downs, and kneeled the remaining 3 plays of the game.
