Over parents weekend, Deerfield varsity volleyball hosted Exeter on Saturday, losing by a score of 1-3.
We worked on improving our serving in practice this week and Deerfield got out to a first-set lead on that strong serving. We were intelligent in our hitting and ball placement and put Exeter in tough positions from which to pass. Exeter’s strong hitting allowed them to come back and take the set, 21-25, but Deerfield showed this would not be a closely-fought match.
In the second set, the storyline was reversed with Exeter taking a lead that they extended to 11-18, before Deerfield closed the gap and used great serving from Evan Burkert ‘21 to be able to take the set, 25-22.
Exeter played and served well in the third set, pinning us in a couple rotations that allowed them to take multiple points and win the set 17-25.
Deerfield’s team-first attitude showed as they continued to play intelligently and rise to the strong level of play from Exeter. Deerfield spotted Exeter too large a lead to start the set and despite a mini-comeback, Exeter was able to win the set, 19-25.
Kudos to both teams for a great afternoon of volleyball!
After a couple days off from playing for the long weekend, Deerfield returns to practice next week before hosting a Sunday match against Andover at 1pm.
